A hero is an ordinary person in extraordinary circumstances who persists in being an ordinary person.
This may be a bit confusing, but history seems to have borne it out:

In the second world war, there were many gentiles who risked their lives, helping Jews escape the Nazis; after the war, when asked why they did, almost invariably, they replied "I did what anybody would have" or some words to that effect.

Reading the accounts of people who worked on the Underground Railroad before the American Civil War, it's pretty obvious that these people didn't consider themselves anything special; they saw a chance to help people in trouble, and did it.
